Original Utility Field Jacket

Our customers rave about our fit, check out the reviews.

FRAHM jackets are cut for real men's bodies and action. We've subtly altered classic tailoring for more movement, for real life. Our jackets do not have a restrictive teenage 'fashion' cut.

Size by measurements, not that you are a 'Large' or 'XL' in another brand. Fit can vary wildly between brands and their size may not be ours.

If you can't measure your chest circumference, the best guide to size is your best fitting existing jacket or suit jacket. Then Live Chat us and we can advise what your size is. We are experienced fitters.

"Tall" sizes are for very tall men, offering exactly the same jacket with significantly longer arms and torso. Don't buy one if you're above average - our standard sizes will fit. Our arm lengths are longer than most.

If you have short arms, we will happily have your sleeves altered for you when possible (most of the time it is). Please Live Chat or email us to discuss.

Nick's Design Notes: This is my first FRAHM design. I wanted to launch with the most versatile jacket possible - that jacket you always grab off the rack. I wanted to create a tough yet stylish and versatile jacket for everything from dashing between meetings in rain showers through to dog trekking from a hilltop pub. I'm very proud of it.

We’ve innovated a British military classic, the waxed field jacket. It’s subtly modernised to make it comfortable for active movement, washable, odourless, breathable, with loads of storage, for versatility and minimal fuss.

There is a LOT of detail here, from the carefully thought-through reinforced pockets, right down to the intricate herringbone care label.

READ DETAILED FIELD JACKET BLOG

Constructed from machine washable waxed fabric, it will gradually develop a worn look, as with all waxed jackets, but without any reduction in performance or the oily inconvenience of old school waxed fabrics.

The fit is ‘tailored athletic’. Not unrealistically tight, not loose, just right. The vented shoulders have extra space built in and the arms are longer, for real-world movement.

Weather range are 2c (room for a thick jumper) to 18c, in high winds or rain showers.

Technical Notes:

  • British Millerain machine washable waxed cotton fabric is surprisingly lightweight, as it isn't laden with sticky wax like old style waxed jackets
  • Breathable, shower and rain proof, but not fully waterproof
  • High, jawline stiffened collar with microfleece lining
  • Cut for activity, with extra room in shoulders
  • Articulation pleats  in shoulders and elbows
  • Twin rear shoulder vents
  • Internal YKK zipped chest pocket and internal book pocket
  • 4 front pockets, secured by indestructible stainless steel snaps from Italy
  • Fleece lined hand pockets behind front cargo pockets
  • Scalloped, reinforced cuffs
  • Twin needle stitching throughout
  • Herringbone grey pure cotton lining is fast drying & odour resistant
  • Embroidered care info is sewn inside, no flappy care labels
  • Machine washable, does not need reproofing

£10 from each jacket sold will be donated to Mind mental health charity.

      Camo Field Jacket

Often in life, the anticipation of something that you've been looking forward to can be better than the reality when it arrives. I can safely say - not so in the case of this jacket.

Had been looking for an excuse to pull the trigger on this coat, and when Nick dropped the price, and put it in the archive, I was fresh out of excuses.

Having sat on the hook for a few days, the chance to press it into action came at the weekend with two stern tests. With lockdown, we've taken to doing a lot of walking on the weekend and this Saturday / Sunday provided two wintery outings.

On the Saturday, with snow forecast and just 1C, we set out and all I had under my jacket was a long sleeved mid weight merino base layer. I wore scarf and hat - with the scarf in place it wasn't really possible to affix the top two snaps in place, but no matter, I was snug. As we walked up into the high ground of the peak district, the snow really came in and the jacket comfortably shrugged it off keeping me both dry and warm. Test number one well passed.

Sunday brought no snow, but the mercury dropped into minus figures, so this time I wore a merino t shirt, and mid weight long sleeve top under my jacket. Plenty room still for both. This time I didn't take the scarf and did up the top two buttons - a close fit, but definitely keeps out the worst of the weather. Again, up into the peak district, again test passed with flying colours.

In summary - very happy with the performance. Look and fit? Well looks wise, I just think this is a fun jacket. I think a lot of people will overlook the coat as an old army surplus so in some ways, the quality on display here sails under the radar. I just love the camo, and the cut and look of the field jacket is suitably rufty tufty - right up my street.

On fit I am just amazed and delighted. At 6 ft 7ins, getting coats that fit well is really not something I am used to. Emmalou advised an XL tall, which is what the fit guide said to be fair. Sleeve length is literally perfect. Fitted enough not to be baggy, but still room underneath for layers. Snug around the hips too.

On other details, I think others have said it all. Fleecy lined pockets are brilliant - I didn't wear gloves on either of our walks and hands were warm in the pockets. Snaps - yes, they're a good push to get closed, but rather that than coming undone. Charcoal herringbone lining is soft, warm and comfortable. Packaging is cool, customer service was excellent.

To conclude - love the coat, and like many others, I suspect this may not be my last Frahm purchase.

      3rd Purchase

I ordered another utility jacket as the one I purchased last year I recycled to my nephew, lockdown had a strange way of making my shoulders slightly larger! Anyway orders the black in XL, fantastic fit and the jacket is everything other reviewers have said, fit, finish style all 5 star. Had it for 7 days now and it's been put to good use coping with the weather thrown at it in the North East. Thanks Nick and the team delivering quality products, I even made a small investment in the company. Merry Christmas all, I'm sure 2021 will bring many more orders. Best thing for me is that you don't see many jackets from Frahm out and about they are pretty exclusive as the limited production runs keep them that way.

      Fabulous jacket again!!

I already own a City Coat which was absolutely worth the wait of the pre order so when I noticed the lockdown discount I couldn’t resist! The hardest part was choosing which one, I knew after buying the city coat the end product was going to be top notch which made the decision harder! I’ve always liked the Utility Field and initially wanted navy but It wasn’t available in my size so I plumped for black instead. ( although very nearly went for the camo...next time! ) When the box arrived, there had been a mistake and I’d received the Harrington in error. Not to worry as a quick message to Emmalou and I received my jacket a couple of days later. ( The dilemma now is that having tried the Harrington, I will have to order one of those for the better weather! ) the Field jacket is superb, the fit is perfect again and it is a lot lighter than most wax jackets and it still feels tough. Lots of pockets and I can still wear a jumper underneath. Just like with the city coat, you can tell the effort and hard work that’s gone into designing the coat. I’m also so glad I went for the black as it looks really sharp too. Once again five stars not just for the product itself but for customer service with regards swapping out the one sent in error. Will definitely not be my last Frahm jacket!

      Superb, stylish and comfortable

I have waited until I had worn my Utility Field jacket for one month before posting my review. The jacket delivers everything that is written in the promo. The quality is reflected in the price but it delivers everything it promises and is worth the investment. A hugely satisfied new Frahm customer.
