A waxed field jacket can do most of the heavy lifting in man's life.

Smart but workmanlike, it fits in as well on a business trip as a Saturday night out, or a pint by the fire.

The front four pocket configuration was created to hold the military or hunter's gear within easy access.

The waxed toughened and weather-proofed the cotton fabric. This covered as much of the weather they'd encounter, as possible, maintaining breathability and comfort at pace.

The problem (I do love a jacket problem) is they got stuck in the mid-twentieth century. An amazing time for setting what would become many men's most classic styles, but eighty years is a long time not to push forwards.

Here's how we redesigned the Waxed Classic & Quilted Field Jackets, to make them what we think (and can prove) are the best there are, anyway.

DRY NOT STICKY

Traditional waxed cotton is a smart, utility, country statement in itself.

It's also heavy, shiny, sticky, hot and sweaty, comes off on you & your clothes, needs reproofing.

You can't even wash it. Yack. I once tried to machine wash an old style waxed jacket. The jacket was destroyed.  It took me hours to get all the gunge out of the machine. Piles of it.

I don't want to wear piles of gunge.

Enter Halley Stevensons of Dundee, who make us our dry waxed cotton in beautiful shades.

Lightweight, machine wash, not sticky, matt, pleasant, far more breathable.

NINE CARGO POCKETS

We're hardly invented the concept of pockets. I do feel we're uniquely better at PROPER pockets.

Pockets are often performative, unable to hold more than a packet of sweets. Too flush to expand for bottles. Baggy, saggy and round. No hand pockets. Or hand pockets that force your wrists into strange angles.

Sod that. I'm a total jacket geek. I want clean lined, sharp angled, crisp pockets, with big bellows that expand when big things are put in, and still look great.

Cargo pockets with 'envelope' cut flaps, which increase the depth even more (see Thermos above, for details), if needed (and not if not) and increase the security again.

Hand pockets where hand want to go, lined with beautiful pure cotton moleskin.

Three internal pockets on a beautiful FRAHM trademark tartan lining.

Oh, and then there's the snaps...
